Time of the Writer Photo Gallery

Tsitsi Dangarembga and Chika UnigwePhotography has long since developed from a hobby into a passion for me (pun intended!); and taking pictures of writers is an especially pleasurable pursuit.

Like most photographers, I prefer to shoot my subjects when they’re not looking – you capture the most natural expressions when the reaction is to something other than you.

At the Time of the Writer this year I was well-positioned at many events, and had an especially good haul of shots. I’ve posted twenty-two of them to my online gallery – please browse and enjoy.

April, TS Eliot famously wrote, is the cruellest month – a notion that remains a puzzlement to some, for it heralds summer’s advent in the half of the world where he lived, a very pleasant time to be in England!

Our days, on the other hand, are getting darker, and the night air has acquired a hint of chill. Winter looms… Fortunately, so does “SAfm Literature”, which airs on April 1st this week – the perfect start to a nominally “cruel” month.

We will begin with a very serious and highly relevant discussion with Sarah Hudleston, whose biography of Zimbabwe’s MDC leader Mogan Tsvangirai, Face of Courage, merits revisiting in light of developments in that country, both generally and with regard to Tsvangirai personally.

Victor Dlamini on SAfm: Time of the Writer, Comrade Fatso, James Clarke and More

On my show this week (“SAfm Literature” – airing Sundays from 1 to 4pm), I’m pleased to be hosting the University of KwaZulu Natal’s Peter Rorvik, who’s in charge of the Centre for Creative Arts there, which is about to move forward with its 10th Time of the Writer festival. Keeping a festival going for a decade is no small acheivement, and the astonishingly diverse group of writers who will be attending this year is commensurate with the occasion: Click here for the full list, and tune in to hear more about the readings, performances and other goings on at this major event.
